Educational issues came to a head when NCLB came into play. Each state is doing its best to confront these issues with intervention methods. This occurred in my district two years ago as with adopted a new Language Arts program. Our district chose to use an animated software program to help students with five different areas: phonics, phonemic awareness, comprehension, fluency and vocabulary.
At first when I looked at my topic, I wanted to research just the gains in fluency of technology based…

Three years ago, my school system invested in a research based software program called istation. I was part of the initial team that was trained in how to use this program. My job was to go back to my school and train the kindergarten and first grade teachers. The following year, we added second and third gra…

I have often looked at the title of a class and wonder what exactly it would entail, wonder what would the class involve and if I would gain any knowledge applicable to the classroom. I did this with my Walden University Class Bridging Learning Theory, Instruction and Technology Reflection. I'm not one to spend a lot of time wondering which theory I lean toward or use the most. So when I started this class, I had to reflect a great deal on what I do, how I do it and put it all into writing.
Aft…

I've written before on my journal about my mom being ill so I wanted to update everyone. My mom passed away this past week at the age of 79. I was able to be with her and my dad during the six days prior to her death. Although she was in an almost comatose state, we talked and talked. (Or should I say, I talked and talked). This time allowed me to ask for forgiveness from her for any wrongdoings I had ever done and to pray with her every day. I know she heard me as she moaned as I talked. It was…

I really enjoyed learning about this application. I can see this as a tool my first graders will love.
Key points in social constructivism learning theory include “Reality is constructed through human activity, members
of a society together invent the properties of the world, people create meaning through their interactions with each
other and the obje…

It's so exciting when you learn something new. I downloaded a collage application called Picasa and made a collage of pictures of my daughter and me in Yosemite National Park. I'm so excited I learned this new skill. Just think about how I can use this in the classroom. The students will love it.

"The basic premise of constructivist theories is that people create their own meaning through experience. In constructivism, students are encouraged to learn main ideas on their own through discovery learning. Examples include learning about compound words by playing with word strips, learning about addition a…

In the readings from this week, Orey gave four roles of cognitive tools and examples of each. The four roles are: information seeking, information presentation, knowledge organization and knowledge integration. Two instructional strategies that relate to the cognitive learning theories are cues, questions and advance organizers and summarizing and note taking.
“Presenting information involves the organization, format, and verbalization of knowledge conveyed through cognitive tools” (Orey, 2001)…

I have been told I can purchase a new keyboarding program for my classroom, grades K-4. We presently have Mavis Beacon but it seems rather outdated. Does anyone else have a program they love?

I am currently taking my fourth Walden University class titled Bridging Learning Theory, Instruction, and Technology. This week’s readings and videos were about Behaviorism as it relates to reinforcing effort and homework and practice.
Orey (Orey, 2001) states that “behaviorism is primarily concerned with observable and measurable aspects of human behavior.” He goes on to say that “behaviorists also hold that all behaviors can also be unlearned and replaced by new behaviors” (Orey, 2001). Havin…

We have currently been in school for 4 1/2 weeks already. Teachers started back August 3 and students came August 10th. Currently the webmaster for 2 of our district's websites (Language Arts and Math), my school's website, our Education Association website and my classroom website. Still teaching first grade and loving it. Received a Mobi (interwrite board) and projector this year so I'm thrilled! Also taking a new graduate class through Walden University entitled Bridging Learning Theory, Inst…

If you had to choose one blog to read, which one would you choose? I ask this question because I am always amazed at how much I learn and grow from Kim Cofino's blog, Always Learning. Kim focuses on the curriculum, pedagogy, integration models, project planning, etc, rather than specific tools. She has a great post today with sage advice for new (and old:) tech integration specialists here: http://bit.ly/AlwaysLearning
Which blogs do you read?
Here's my nomination for...

Hi everyone, I’m working on behalf of Teachers TV to ask for teachers to give their advice and opinions to fellow teachers who are taking part in a new series of
From Good to Outstanding. I thought the teachers on this site would find this relevant, so I hope this is OK to post here (I also posted this in the forum but thought it warranted a blog post too). The series started on 9th June 2009 and we would really like more teachers to get involved an…

I had always thought I was in the middle of the line when it came to technology skills in my classroom. However, I am finishing up a class toward my masters on integrating technology in the classroom through Walden University and realize I am just getting my feet wet.
Dr. Smith, my Walden University professor, says “it’s not the technology that counts, it’s the method that is important.” So does that mean my method should include more technology ☺. There are some weeks where I do not include an…

I realize the this is my "teacher's" blog but you know I'm a family person before a teacher. It is now 12:33 a.m. on Friday morning and I'm sitting next to my mom as she lies in a hospital room. She fell again last night (almost 24 hours ago) and bruised her forehead and ribs again. We were just in the ER all day Saturday and although I thought it best that she be admitted, the doctor on call didn't think so. So after last nights fall and trouble breathing they admitted her. That is after we sat…
