Some School Poems

These don't really have anything to do with technology but I'm posting them in response to a request on Plurk

Dear Kindergarten Parents,
Your baby started school today
A first big milestone along the way
He's not a baby, oh no not he
As big as any in the class you see

Till now you've been his shining sun
Your influence has been equaled by none
But now I'll share in his work and play
Thanks for lending me your child today

This little hand so small,
Is starting to school today
This… Continue

Sharing a project that I loved

And I think the students enjoyed it too! I just posted a new entry on my blog about this project but I thought I'd share about it here too.

My Kindergarten-3rd Grade classes have all been participating in the Winter Wonderland Project. One of the January activities was about Wilson Bentley and as I was researching him and things about him on the web I… Continue

Election Lesson Planning Rambling - and I do mean rambling!

I probably should be adding this to my Teaching Technology blog and it may make it there at some point. I also thought about posting this in the forum but realized it was more just a brain dump so thought a blog might be more appropriate. Just warning you this truly is just rambling .. lol

I'm trying to organize all of the information and ideas that I have for covering the election and actually get my… Continue

Thanks for the encouragement on the Teach with Picture Books blog. This looks like a pretty cool ning. Thanks for the welcome.

I knew you would have good suggestions!
I notice a lot of people have been signing up lately. What do you think of pairing or grouping people for commenting?
It would make things more manageable, but I also don't trust a lot of the people who are signing up to actually follow through with the project. I think people have good intentions, but in my experience a lot of people sign up to do projects and then drop off the face of the virtual earth.

I am going to work on a timeline, but the first VT will be the introductions (like last year) and I think the projected start date is end of this month.

I just approved your membership for KinderKids. The idea was to have the kids leave comments for each other, but, as you can imagine, it was difficult. I loved the project (and my students really enjoyed it) but there were some management issues, and I felt that it started to fizzle out a bit. If you go to my page and listen to our VTs, I think they are really cute (was thinking about showing them to the 1st graders just for fun since they have grown up so much). There were a few comments left for us, and the kids were SO excited about them, but I'm not sure they are still there (and I have no idea what happened to them). We used google earth to fly to the other school before we listened to their VT, and we did leave a few comments.

I am trying to take some leadership this year in getting the project a little more organized, maybe a timeline, maybe partnering up pairs of schools for commenting. I would love your help with this, if you're so inclined :)

It would be short (10-15 minutes) but it might be difficult if you have 2nd graders at that time. I'll try to find someone else first. I will let you know how it goes.

Today they asked when we could do the chat room again. They said they loved it and asked if we could do it again Thursday. I said only if I figure out something to chat about, that I didn't think it was that great with all the silly typing. Would you want to be the mystery guest in my chat on Thursday? If it worked well, I could then reciprocate for your class. It would be at around 4:15 pm Eastern time.

Hi Vicky,
About the chat....they really liked it BUT they get so silly. I don't know if it is worthwhile. I did chat with them, but I didn't set a topic. I just asked various questions. Some of the kids weren't even typing words just nonsense. But it was novel and they thought it was a lot of fun. If I was to do it again, I would try to have more of a plan. I used tinychat.com. It is even easier than chatzy b/c you don't need to send the link in an email, they just give you a really easy URL for that chat. You can also save the chat. Would it be totally control-freakish of me to grade the chat??!!!!!
I have an idea we could try for your fourth graders. Maybe I could be a guest in your chatroom, either as myself or as someone famous, and they could ask questions and try to guess who. I definitely think something more "defined" would work better than just the "let's chat."

Winter Wonderland Wiki...
Vicky, I LOVED the activities on the Winter Wonderland Wiki and was wondering if you know of anything that's been created for Spring?

One option is to teach your older grades how to do some of it themselves.

I think it saves in PNG format which is actually better since it's a lossless format. There are free batch convertors that you can download to convert from PNG to JPG.
