Teaching Technology: Reflections of a K-8 Computer Teacher

Edcamping Again

What was I doing heading 6 hours north on a Friday afternoon in August especially when my lab still wasn’t ready for the new year and my oldest daughter was headed back to college in five days? I was headed for edcamp SFBay, that’s what. I had been asked to be on the organizing committee [...]

I Wanna Be a Rock Star!

August 2nd-4th, I had the privilege of attending Rock Star Teacher Summer Tech Camp. What an amazing 3 days filled with lots of learning and fun. I had planned on attending this camp when it was scheduled to be held in Calabasas and really struggled with the decision of attending up in O’Neals. I am [...]

It Was Just One of Those … Years!

I was really excited about the online collaborative projects amd activities that I had scheduled for my classes this past year. Some of them we had done in previous years, both successfully and not so successfully, and some were new projects that my students hadn’t done in the past. This just seemed to be one [...]

ISTE 2011 Virtually: Day 3-4

First things first, I am definitely going to ISTE 2012! While I was able to follow along virtually and participate online in the ISTE Unplugged sessions, the thing I wasn’t able to do is meet all of the wonderful people in my PLN that inspire me daily. I want that experience next year! Starting With [...]

ISTE 2011 Virtually: Day 2

What I Learned I’m a night owl so getting up for a 9:30am EDT ISTE Unplugged session (that’s 6:30am my time) wasn’t easy but that was my plan for the day & I did accomplish it. So what did I learn? Edmodo is … a Social Learning Site by Paula L. Naugle – I hadn’t [...]

ISTE 2011 Virtually: Day 0-1

Unfortunately, I am unable to attend ISTE 2011 in person this year but that doesn’t mean that I can’t learn and participate in the conference from home virtually. Many of the educators in my PLN are in Philadelphia at ISTE 2011 and are freely sharing what they are learning on Twitter, Plurk and on their [...]

To Change … or not to Change?

What I Know I know that Edmodo would feel familiar to my students using other social media sites and I like what I’ve seen on it so far but: I already post all assignments on my Computer Lab Wiki and I can set up discussions on the wiki – though I don’t often use the [...]

Cyberbullying – Yes or No?

Cyberbullying is a subject that I cover every year in Middle School. When asked what Cyberbullying is my students tend to talk about the sensational things they’ve read or heard – the cases where it leads to suicide or someone being charged with a crime. There always seems to be an attitude that if there [...]

Some School Poems

These don't really have anything to do with technology but I'm posting them in response to a request on Plurk

Dear Kindergarten Parents,

Your baby started school today

A first big milestone along the way

He's not a baby, oh no not he

As big as any in the class you see

Till now you've been his shining sun

Your influence has been equaled by none

But now I'll share in his work and play

Thanks for lending me your child… Continue

Sharing a project that I loved

And I think the students enjoyed it too! I just posted a new entry on my blog about this project but I thought I'd share about it here too.

My Kindergarten-3rd Grade classes have all been participating in the Winter Wonderland Project. One of the January activities was about Wilson Bentley and as I was researching him and things about him on… Continue

Election Lesson Planning Rambling - and I do mean rambling!

I probably should be adding this to my Teaching Technology blog and it may make it there at some point. I also thought about posting this in the forum but realized it was more just a brain dump so thought a blog might be more appropriate. Just warning you this truly is just rambling .. lol

I'm trying to organize all of the information and ideas that I have for covering the election and actually get my… Continue

Thank you for joining the Ning. I wish our classes came twice a week. Once every six days just isn't enough!

Thank you for adding the pictures. It looks like it must be easy to move around to reach each student. Something that's missing in my lab.

For now I use the software and add the students' voices. Depending on the project, the students choose the characters and emotives.
Students write/edit scripts, and then record/edit their work at their computer. They save their practice audio file in their folder on the student network, and save their final recording to a designated folder on the network. I can then easily upload it on my computer. If you do not have a student network, then save to a flashdrive or CD.
I have recently trained other teachers how to use Crazy TAlk and our principal purchased it for each teacher at the training session:).
It is less expensive for the EDU version - contact a representative. They were very accomodating and quickly responded to questions and requests.

Thanks, Vicky! I hope it saves everyone some time by not having to start from scratch. :)

Hey Vicky,

I checked out your wiki and I LOVE it! It looks great and really easy to follow for the kids. I love that you have a theme this year in the lab. Wish I could come up with something that clever! I would love to hear more about the projects you will be doing!

Great job.

(PS How did you get your pages in the correct order, as opposed to in alpha order?)

I'm so impressed by both your website and your wiki. I feel so behind on the learning curve. I hope you don't mind if I borrow some of your ideas. They are awesome.

How long have you been teaching computers? Last year was my first. I'm jealous that you get to see your classes twice a week. I see mine for 30 minutes once a week except keyboarding in 7th grade. I see them for 40 minutes daily for one quarter.

WOW! I'm so impressed! I love your wikis and how organized you are. I felt like I was just treading water last year. I hope to be more organized this year. I'm thinking of doing a wiki like you did. Love all the stuff you do.
My 7th grades does computer applications. Basically only the first 10-15 minutes is keyboarding (longer if they are being loud or playing around). Since we had a different computer teacher each year for the last 4 years, they didn't "learn" keyboarding. I'm trying to break old habits and get them up to the speed and technique requirements for the high school. Thanks for being willing to share so much!!

Winning the wireless lab blew me away. You should definitely participate when they re-open the give away. I can't say enough about how wonderful they have been. It's going to give us a whole rolling lab for the second floor in addition to my classroom/ computer lab on the first floor.

Hey Vicky,
All you need to do is find where it says RSS on your page here, then copy and paste the feed link to you blog (if you want to do your posts from your blogspot blog it would be http://visionsbyvicky.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default. You can also rearrange the order in which everything appears on this page. Just click the headings of each section and drag them around!
Hope this helps.
