paper laptop

Thinking about doing these with my Kindergarteners on the first day of school, to prepare them for getting our actual laptops (Chromebooks) the following week. Anyone done this? Tips? Maybe good for first graders, too?

I like the folder idea! Very cute. I use a paper keyboard with the first grade in conjunction with Dance Mat Typing. Their hands and abilities are not ready for touch typing, but we get familiar with the keys. We color keys with a purple crayon for keys to touch with the left hand and red crayon for keys we touch with the right hand. In Kindergarten, I just teach them where the letters in their first name are and the delete key.

Now I just need the upper part. Could easily draw an empty box. Hmmmm

This worked VERY well with my kindergarteners BUT I did not do it the first week because they didn't know how to use glue/color inside of the lines/etc yet.  I waited a few weeks.  I show the Sid the Science Kid episode about computers and read a big book about computers until they're settled in their classrooms and learn how to color/glue :)  Made my life a lot easier! (Remeber: "dot, dot, not a lot" works wonders for reminding kinders howt o use glue....otherwise they use the entire bottle/stick!!)

I have a couple of keyboards and hands that I use to make little laptops for the kdg. students. Wish I could attach them to this post. If you want them send me an email to jdunlapwv@olatheschools.org
