Elementary Tech Teachers

A place for elementary tech teachers to share.

Which is better for a small k-5 school: fewer iPads or more Nooks?  I seem to be grappling endlessly with the question.

It depends on what you want the technology to be used for and your money you have.  iPads have many free and 99cent apps that work great for all subjects.  You can even install the free Nook app on the iPad so you can read on the iPad.

The Nook is best if you just want a technology for reading and have limited money.  However, if you would like a technology that can be used for math, history, and science as well as creating stories like the free storykit app, I would suggest buying an iPad.

You can see some K-5 iPad app ideas for all subjects at http://www.quia.com/pages/ohostetter/teacher2teacher

A third choice for education is the new Kindle Fire 7" HD Color Display at $199 with these educational features:
"Kindle FreeTime - a personalized tablet experience just for kids. Set daily screen limits, and give access to appropriate content for each child.
Free on every Kindle Fire HD. Kindle Owners' Lending Library - Kindle owners can choose from more than 180,000 books to borrow for free with no due dates, including over 100 current and former New York Times best sellers and all 7 Harry Potter books."

I think I agree with Obe, the iPads have many excellent apps for curriculum subjects. We are using iPads in small groups most of the time, so we only need 6 - 12 ipads in use at a time.

I have collected a pretty big list of iPad apps both free and paid on my website  that are arranged by subject. Have a look  here:  http://oakdome.com/k5/lesson-plans/iPad-lessons/ipad-educational-ap...

My kids LOVE Math Bingo, Rocket Math and BookWorm.
