Elementary Tech Teachers

A place for elementary tech teachers to share.

Hello,

First off I would just like to thank you for all of the help you have all given me. I feel bad for asking so many questions but this is my first year teaching and I have never taught computers before (not even as a sub!). My school has a very tight budget. I have basically been told that I need to find free software for my students to use. My computers only have Microsoft office on them. I just installed windows movie maker.  I am using TypingWeb for typing and at this point I am looking for any other programs that you know of that are free that I can look into. I am really looking for my K-2 set but anywhere K-8 would be wonderful!

We have switched this year to using completely Open Source software (we're running Edubuntu - a version of Linux), so all of the software that we use is free.  Our budget for software is VERY low, so we went with Open Source all around this year.  Most of the software is available for Windows as well though.

So far this year, I have used GCompris Educational Suite (http://gcompris.net/-en-) and TuxPaint (http://tuxpaint.org/ - this one is a favourite in our lab!) for K-2.  Last year, I used a lot of literacy based websites (ABCya.com and Starfall.com as two of the most popular ones), as well as Kerpoof.com and other websites (many of which I found by following this Ning).  With Grade 1 and 2, we also spent some time working in Microsoft Office last year, mostly just playing around with typing words and some WordArt.   Hope that helps!

Thanks Lisa! The GCompris looks great. I will play around with it this weekend and install it (we are not networked so I have to do it manually for all 24 computers) for my kindergarteners this coming week!

Along with Tux Paint there is also Tux Type and Tux of Math Command. I also have downloaded GCompris like Lisa. Another one that I like pretty well is Sebran (there is also a Sebran Mini). I want to use Google Earth this year but haven't downloaded it yet. There was a typing program I found one time called Rapid Type that was free...it was OK, nothing fabulous though.
